The stencil that I chose was the silhouette of Rosie the
Riveter. I find Rosie to be inspiring to all women. Since Rosie is not an
actual person I find that she can be seen in many ways. She does not show the
outer physical appearance of the “typical” woman. She demonstrates power and
strength for woman with some feminine qualities. Most people know who Rosie the
Riveter is and so I believed that she was definable enough to have just a silhouette
of her. The reason I chose the silhouette was mainly because I felt that by her
not having an actual face she could be relatable to more women. She is a very
iconic woman in the woman’s rights movement but I felt that since she had a
particular skin color she could be more relatable to certain race than another.
By Rosie being a silhouette people of all different color and appearance can
have their own interpretation of Rosie and possibly see themselves as Rosie.
Rosie is the cover of my sketchbook because she represents hope for all people
not just woman. She represents the underrepresented because she is the opposite
of what the “ideal woman should be”. She speaks for the people who are not like
anyone else and I feel that it is important for people to know that being unique
can be iconic and that it can be desirable.
