I really enjoyed the
presentation on Margarita Cabrera by Rodriquez Kaelyn. Her art is extremely impactful
not only calling out the injustices in political powered but also making the
audience aware of their fixture on materialistic objects that are not necessary.
For example one of my favorite pieces by Cabrera is the “H2 Hummer” piece. The
use of Vinyl, wood, copper wire, thread and car parts builds up the model of
the H2 Hummer, the hummer has the same proportions as the real thing and
demonstrates how our society idolizes cheap objects to make us feel better
about our place in society. A car as big as a Hummer is not necessary for
everyday life, but just because we see celebrities drive it our and the price
is listed high, we give value to it without even noticing its affect on the
environment and our finances.
The materials she uses
throughout her art also speak loudly about what her art is suppose to
represent. The continuous use of thread throughout her work is what really
attracted me to her. Cabrera’s use of fabric to make hard surfaced objects soft
is incredible, such as the sewing machine. A sewing machine is used to make pieces
of fabric into a single garment and she is able to use multiple pieces of
fabric to create a single work of art.
