Revealed Aesthetics of A Chicana Artist: Commentary On Alicia Billalobos’s Blog Post

Alicia Billalobos posted an entirely new image of Laura Aguilar that captured my interest. Knowing of the health issues and insecurities that all encompassed the chicana artist, is what makes the messages within her art that much powerful. She has gained confidence through her unusual candor and frankness. We see her evolution in exploring both her sexuality and herself in general, with the help of her brother (the photographer). If anyone knows the name of this piece, please comment below. I had trouble finding it this week.

This contemporary work of art does in fact portray a transparent picture of Aguilar’s conflict with her appearance; I completely agree with Alicia on this. The baggage that Aguilar holds is literally exemplified in this image. The idea of body image as being a strenuous experience is effectively seen through the struggle that Aguilar seems to be having with the figure; she is stretching it over her own hunched-self in order to be able to carry the full weight. Therefore, this idealized figure she is using to contrast with her own body. And, for there to be a desert terrain as the background only emphasizes the isolation that a female feels when having to cope with such a major societal influence.
