SPARC Day of the Dead 11/01

This past week, I attended the SPARC Day of the Dead event on Saturday, November 1st. The gallery was filled with altars, on display until November 11th or so. There were also altars on tables set up outside, and displays in the front garden made of mock skeletons and marigold designs. The center also provided bread and Mexican hot chocolate for those who wanted it, but there were so many people it was difficult to move throughout. I found the gallery space the most beautiful, every surface was decorated, even the ceiling had garlands of paper flowers across draped into the center. I've attached three photos as well. One is of the centerpiece in the altar at the far end of the gallery, a large skeleton head with an altar decorated with Frida Kahlo below it. Another is a photo of two family members who passed away in the last year that I added onto an altar. The third photo is an altar at the entry to the gallery with large ceramic skeletons and marigolds that was very striking as you made your way into the packed gallery. It was interesting to see not only the color and amount of objects collected, but also the individualized sections of the altars made by the course at UCLA. There were foods, drinks, beers, flowers, photographs, and other unique objects displayed to remember loved ones by, as well as add to the decoration of each section.
