Week 4: Margarita "Mita" Cuaron

I was quite amazed by the artwork of Margarita “Mita” Cuaron during Nina Friedman presentation in class. Margarita’s “uplift” sculpture in Texas is a very inspirational piece and also interactive. The piece brings the community together, joining the artist to become momentarily artists themselves, taking part in creation of the “uplift” sculpture piece that many people in any community could relate to.
After doing more research on Margarita after class, I came upon an image that was beautiful and memorizing; that image was “Como en vida, come en muerte.” This piece has an amazing color selection, colors that have been placed on with great precision that keeps you constantly focused on the piece wondering “why cant I look away.”
“Como en Vida, Como en Muerte” was an art piece that was chosen to be part of the Virgin Gallery. This piece combines two very significant images for Chicanos. The first is the Virgin of Guadalupe and the second is the skull representing death. I feel that each individual image by itself in the Chicano community would convey a strong narrative. However the combination of both images together is quite striking. The two images together signify to me that although death is inevitable one should also take comfort in death, for life in itself is just a stepping-stone to the after life. Also I feel that the image gives you this sense that even in death, or in the process of dying, the Virgin of Guadalupe would be looking after you giving you comfort along the way.
