Questions for Professor Gaspar de Alba

Theres no place like Aztlan
What made Aztlan be home?
In Abla’s piece I read that we refer back to Aztlan many times, what makes Aztlan home. Home is such a treasured and distinct place in a person’s life and while it can definitely be someone’s home figuratively, a place can just as much, if not more, feel like someone’s actual home. I know in my own family, my parents and grandparents will always feel like their native land of Iran will always feel like home and America will never give them that same feeling they had. With that said, I feel like Aztlan gives the same feeling that Iran gives to my family; and just how I will never truly feel the same feeling and connection they have with Iran, the same goes with Aztlan.

Out of the House, the Halo, and the Whore’s Mask: The Mirror of Malinchismo
Was there a woman, or someone who stood up for all the Chicana women and decided a change needed to be made, and took on the role as a feminist to allow women to be included in the art world, or any other hobby they wanted? Was there a person who started “the movement?”

Reading this piece by Alba, it made me think of all the restrictions women had. Men took so much control over women by making society be that “real” Chicanas only stood for their men and families and for the struggle. Why did it take so long for not only women to start being involved in the art scene, but also so long for somebody to notice that so little women were being recognized for their talents!
