In Shfira M. Goldman’s essay, The Iconography of Self Determination: Race, Ethnicity ,and Class, she
bring the focus of her art and looks at things with more a social perspective. She mentions the movement of the Chicano art,
from its first states of the movement in the 1960’s to how it is now in the
United States. Chicano artists are now celebrating their culture, and ethnicity
more, showing it through with art. Goldman states, although it may be extremely
difficult to achieve and maintain your foundation of your ethnicity in a
society that may not support it fully, they must not give up. Goldman discuses many artists and their work
in her essay, one of them being, Yolanda M. Lopez.

The image I picked was Guadalupe:
Victoria F. Franco, from the Guadalupe series, because its saying so much
in just one frame. First we see that although it is an older woman, she is
still in work clothes, which shows that she has stayed a strong woman, providing for her family. Second, she has
just caught and killed a snake which in some ways shows that she is strong on
the inside too, not fearful of anything in her way. And third, she is resting
on the cape of La Virgin De Guadalupe surrounded by a shining gold light. This
women is a perfect example of someone who clearly did so much for her family
and so much for her culture.
