This summer I had the opportunity to travel abroad in the
revolutionary country of Cuba. This is a picture of me overlooking the
city of Havana.

Hello y'all! My name is Stephanie Lopez. I am a senior/ 2nd
year transfer from Pasadena City College. I am majoring in Chicana/o Studies
and minoring in Education. I am planning on getting master’s degree in the
field of social work in the near future.
I’ve always had an interest in art. At one point in my life,
I wanted to purse a degree in art history. However, after taking major prep
courses I realized that the major was not meeting my interests. I wanted to
explore influences from other cultures and nonconforming art produced by people
of color. I’m extremely passionate about the Chicana/o movement and I
feel that this course will delve further into art that is committed to social
change and political activism.
Growing up in East Los Angeles it is impossible overlook La Virgen de Guadalupe. From liquor
stores to hair salons, her image is impossible to escape. My single mother did
not instill religion in our family due to her constricted time and multiple job
positions. Her image for the majority of my childhood was a mystery. I learned
about her significance through word of mouth and my community’s efforts to come
together for the Day of the Virgin.
