Laura Alvarez

Laura Alvarez is a recording, visual artist, designer and community activist from Southern California who is committed to social justice. She provides the audience with powerful images of immigrant women in her art and depicts domestic workers as heroes. Her painting, Double Agent Sirvienta (DAS) series, positions the traditional maid’s uniform as an important power in her mission. DAS utilizes technology and gadgets to fight for justice and changes the traditional notion of comics. She challenges and brings attention to the ways in which domestic and public labors are constructed. She presents characters that offer alternative representations of Latina immigrant and domestic labor. In her lecture she presented a brief history of the evolvement of domestic workers in the United States.
