W3-Shifra Goldman

Prompt-The very short essay by art historian Shifra Goldman discusses the iconography of Chicano self-determination in terms of race, ethnicity and class. For this week's blog post briefly discuss the essay, then select an image by Yolanda M. Lopez to discuss in terms of her own Chicana self-determination. Obviously her iconography of Chicana self-determination includes race, ethnicity, class and gender.

In the essay"The Iconography of Chicano Self-Determination: Race, Ethnicity, and Class" Goldman shows us the strength in our Mexican roots. Depicting the very first beginnings and attaching meanings to value Chicano Art. Race depicts the arduous work geographically speaking of the culture which was define by hard workers. The mix of indigenous people with Spain left a mark on history that will go deeper on race later on. Goldman shows the struggle and the history behind the truth on what identify us more indiginous than anything else. She notes"In what amounts to an affirmation of racial pride, the Spanish(presumably white) lineage is deemphasized while the dark-skinned indigenous heritage is stressed",  this is to emphasize our race and in a way embrace our race and truly appreciate our indiginous roots. Ethnicity in the other hand is a residue of societal process that may take generations in evolve. Goldman brings nationalism to better understand ethnicity even the two have a relationship they differ because nationality is given by birth and ethnicity is assimilate it. Class here she talks about society levels as of high, working and others. Self-determination is portrait in all Chicano Art history and studying each of this terms separately emphasis identity and values towards Mexican culture and the roots. Goldman essay attach to Yolanda M. Lopez image makes a duo of a very strong foundation to what Chicano Art stands and I learn part of my Mexican identity and solidify Chicano art in my life.

I picked the image of the sewing lady because when I saw it I couldn't imagine any other image to depict Self-Determination. All aspects race, ethnicity, class and gender are portrait beautifully in one in this image.
