Blog 8: Favianna Rodriguez's Pussy Power

Pussy Power 2012, Digital Art Print, 17 x 12 inches.

The work that was really interesting to me this week was Favianna Rodriguez’s. I like how colorful and simple her pieces are. Her work reminds of Melanie Cervantes work with the activist style. Even though they are both simple and colorful artist, the difference is very obvious. Cervantes work is more detailed in the body and face, while Rodriguez’s work reminds me of cubism without the precise detailing. After looking at more of her works, I noticed that she is a very outspoken person who holds nothing back (I call her a person with no filter). Just like many other artist, she expresses herself through her work. Her art and collaborative projects address migration, economic inequality, gender justice, and ecology. In her Pussy Power series Rodriguez does just that by holding back nothing. Rodriguez created this poster after watching politicians and conservatives conducting an all-out war on women, their bodies, their access to health, their right to birth control, and their right to free. This piece was a challenge and rejection to patriarchy. Rodriguez said, “I created this set because I felt it was time for some slut positivity and some major ass kicking of these conservative, woman-hating, stupid men.” To sum up the message in this poster, I translate it to, someone fighting back after they have been picked on for too long. I love to see not only women, but everyone fighting back against injustice to be treated equal.
