Week 9: A la Carmen Lomas Garza

I have decided to draw a mother/daughter scene at the style of Carmen Lomas Garza. This scene depicts a mother holding a black broom while cleaning her children's room all the while her eldest daughter (a.k.a me) sleeps throughout the entire time. The daughter has just come home from college for Thanksgiving break and after the a five hour drive home she is exhausted and can sleep through anything.

This scene includes qualities found in Garza's artwork, such qualities include: the border surrounding the picture, the family doing everyday things, the Virgen de Guadalupe picture, the cross, and the large window scene.

These items such as the cross, the Virgen of Guadalupe image, the large window and the dog playing with a tennis ball are all images that can easily be found in my own home. Other items in this scene include a blue shirt, fruit: an orange, an apple, a banana on the ground, a purple hat on the top bunk bed, a blue backpack on the ground, green shoes and red socks are thrown in the ground. Behind the window is a sunrise scene composed of the following colors: dark blue, blue, slight green, some orange, and yellow. The presence of autumn is also seen through the changing colors of the leaves on the brown tree branch. The bunk bed is something that can be found in my own home. These are the qualities that can be seen in my home and they are the qualities that are present in Carmen Lomas Garza's images.

  1. Wow! You did a really good job capturing all the details. I really connected to your image because my mom sometimes cleans my sister's room as she sleeps since she is always so busy with school, volunteer work, etc. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I love how you filled in the whole page for your drawing! I tend to draw with a lot of empty spaces so seeing your work makes me want to draw in more details as possible. Great work :)
