Melanie Cervantes
An image that stood out to me was Melanie Cervantes's "United for Justice Not Divided by Racism" poster that was made in collaboration with anti-racist organizer Chris Crass. Similar to printmaker Favianna Rodriguez, Cervantes addresses issues of workers' rights, capitalism, immigration and racism. Posters like these serve to educate the public in an accessible way and promotes unity among our community. This image connects immigration, capitalism, and racism all in one because they are interconnected and go hand in hand. Immigrants have to do hard labor in poor working conditions and get paid unfair wages all because the corporations want to maximize their profits at the expense of families and communities of color. The line united for justice not divided by racism speaks to the solidarity within the Occupy movement and the power that our communities have to make change. Something interesting about this poster is that it was intended to reach white people and improve solidarity between white people and people of color who under the occupy movement were fighting for the same cause. As stated on the goals for this poster by Melanie Cervantes "We want to support white people standing with communities of color in ways that feed and nurture a culture of solidarity, dignity, and love. While we work against the impacts of systems of oppression in our communities, families, and lives, it is essential that we also build up liberatory culture, relationships, alliances, and practices."
