Be All That You Can Be, 1996, Acrylic Gouache,
Ink on Bristol, 15"x23",
got my attention, she said in the description of it "I spoofed an Army ad, because I wanted to comment on how women are always defending their honor against unwanted advances and unexpected comments. Sometimes women become many different characters to experiment with their identity and for protection (e.g. wearing baggy clothes to conceal sexuality).Women find a character that suits them best, that gives them respect and honor in a community and advances them toward self sufficiency. Their strategy becomes a carefully analyzed game in which the goal is to attain the American Dream of security and comfort". I can related to her statement I for once got dress with baggy clothes like she said some will wear it to hide sexuality and is truth some environments aren't suit to be girly and you got to play the part to get by every day sometimes women are force out of their comfort zone to be all they can be and go out and look for a better life some do it as strippers, some in jobs that they didn't dream off but they are a way of getting to the "American Dream" I think what she is trying to portrait is the difficulty to acquire that and even thou she does what she does for a job she feel liberate it and knows that she is fighting for a better life thou I want to mention her other cartoon where the women becomes a monkey, she call this one Evolution, 1997, and she quotes "Sometimes a dancer will become so competitive that all she cares about is the money, evolving into a money mongering monkey". I think her expression and looking at this painting portrait how society sometimes pushes some women to use whatever they have to make a living. She portraits the motive and at time is sad and it impacts, it provokes to think further and not be caught up and stereotypes about this job a lot of women do. I think the painting are great and the colors contrast very good also. i know we were suppose to use only one painting but i think the combination of this two makes an incredible statement of truth and honesty...
