Week 9 Carmen Lomas Garza

Little Peking
My drawing is not necessarily a Thanksgiving-centered image; this year's Thanksgiving dinner was not one that I particularly enjoyed, so I decided to draw something that is more special within my immediate family. My parents live in Fresno, California, which is where I mainly grew up. So over the break, I drove to Fresno with my sister. Being from Fresno, there are not a lot of food choices for vegans, so when I found this Chinese food place with very good vegan and non-vegan options, I was very excited because Chinese food is my dad's favorite food. So every time I come to Fresno and my family has the time, we go to Little Peking for dinner. My dad always orders the spicy shrimp plate, which he calls "spicy shreemps," and we order a vegetarian chicken chow mein along with one other plate. Then, amongst the four of us, we split the dishes and put them all on our individual plates. This place has a lot of great memories for me because it is not only a food place that I love to go to, but it is somewhere that I am able to share with my family and have a good time. Last time I went, I asked my dad a lot about his childhood and what it was like moving to the United States. Even the drives over to Little Peking are very special because lately it has become so common for me to drive only my sister and myself around and my dad only to drive my mom and himself around. So driving over reminds me of when I was little; my sister and I even sit on the same seats as we did when we were growing up.
