There were many quotes from Debra Blake’s book Chicana Sexuality and Gender: Cultural
Refiguring in Literature, Oral History, and Art, that stood out to me but
one quote in particular I was able to relate it more to my recent life. In
chapter four, Blake states, “At the same time, her story, as with any legend, “requires
the audience to examine their world view - their sense of the normal, the
boundaries of the natural,” and perhaps see things from a different perspective.”
(145), which summarizes the idea that in order to move forward one must see
things in not only multiple but also different perspectives. This quote
reminded me of the last class I took with Professor Lopez, Censored! Art of
Trial, because in that class we took a look at a lot of controversial art that I
had never seen before, and in order to be open to it and not judge it right off
the bat, I had to make sure I was viewing all the art in a different
perspective. I took this quote a bit out of context from what she was initially
saying about it in the chapter, but I was able to relate it to what it meant to
me by being able to accept what society views as controversial.
