Presentation: Monica Kim Garza

From the presentations of our classmates this week I really enjoyed the artwork by artist Monica Kim Garza. I think her work is particularly unique because she focuses on portraying women of color in a very non-conventional way and settings. Kim Garza is very inspiring because she emphasizes on showing curvy women who aren’t afraid to show their figure in the public settings she paints. Furthermore, her work focuses on emphasis on women’s sexuality and love towards each other. The artist is not afraid to show women being physical with each other. Also, the positions in which Kim Garza positions the women she paints, really makes me feel like they love their bodies completely and this also makes me think about the importance of her work when it comes to body positivity for women of color. I also really enjoyed the colors she uses in her work because they are so vivid which also extenuates in the dark skin of the women she paints. The different angels in which she paints these women are also important because the viewer can see all the sides of the bodies. For example, how curvy they are, the skin tones, how long the hair is, etc. Also, their facial expression show happiness and pleasure in the events they are participating in. The women seem to be carefree and just loving being themselves.
