The artist I want to present on is Anita Valencia. She is from San Antonio and creates art through the use of recycled materials.
This week the reading "Out of the House, the Halo, and the Whore's Mask" by Alicia Gaspar de Alba, she touched on the art created by Chicanas for the CARA exhibit. She explained the lack of space given to the women who were apart of the exhibit who were left to what is referred to a "closet". What I found to be interesting that Gaspar de Alba wrote on was the three attributes that Chicano men assigned to women. I thought the art piece, Las Tres Marias by Judy Baca was a great play on the limited roles women were seen to fill. I also thought that the artwork described in the article was relevant because it conveyed the issues women were dealing with at the time and when comparing it to today, are still wrestling with. They used their bodies as a weapon in order to combat the objectivity of it by men. The artists hit upon topics such as motherhood. One artist in particular, Barbara Carrasco's piece titled, Pregnant Woman in a Ball of Yarn, was creative in the way she expressed the commitment of motherhood and how it defines a woman. A question I have regarding the reading would be, is Today do we see the same limited space given to Chicana artists and has there been any movements to try and expand their voices in the wider realm of Chicana/o/x art?
