Jorge Luis Guerra

Hello everyone, my name is Jorge Luis Guerra but most of my friends refer to me as George. My preferred pronouns are him or he, however, I won't be offended if you refer to me she or her. A little about me, I was born in Michoacan Pajacuaran, Mexico but raised in the East Bay area. I am a first-generation college student double majoring in philosophy and Chicano/studies in hopes of continuing my education in law school right after I serve my time in the Air Force. I will one day become an Immigration Lawyer.

In addition, I'm the eldest out of six siblings. My current college-level status is a fourth-year and transferring to UCLA was by far the most challenging yet rewarding decision I've made thus far. All deriving from the many obstacles I've encountered. These obstacles presented many issues that affected my life or the life of those around me at one point but now are utilized as a motivating platform for my ambitions and life goals. Both my mother and my father come from a very humble background and as a result, I've learned to appreciate and value my education and various opportunities I've been given. Attaining my associates was a tremendous accomplishment for my family and me but what really allowed my parents to see my determination in academia was the day I left home to pursue my bachelor's here at UCLA.

My overall goal in life is to return and help my community and those who are less fortunate because from a young age I witness underserved communities struggle to attain citizenship, an education, a job or even food to provide. Of all, the separation of families including the devastations they endure of the time they aren't allowed to travel to their home countries is the primary reason why I want to be an immigration lawyer. To help those who haven't seen their family members in years!

Lastly, the reason why I'm in this class is to learn more about the development of art in our society and how art has affected the Chicano movement. I think art is such a critical component in our world that has allowed us to capture history for years to come. I am truly excited to learn about the Chicano/a art and artist.
