This opens up an opportunity to discuss how we define art and what values we place on certain artistic or cultural productions over others, while also taking into consideration under what conditions the art was created and by whom. This draws from Sybil Venegas' article "Conditions For Producing Chicana Art" and Linda Nochlin's article "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" Venegas brings to light the economic, social, and cultural obstacles that Chicana artists had to overcome as women of color in American society and within their own communities. Nochlin challenges the value we place on male-produced art versus women-produced art. The art world has constantly been dominated by white, middle- to upper-class men's narratives. While Chicano artists have made strides in recognition and validation within art spaces, they still replicate the patriarchal structure of society. What inspires me from these readings is that Chicana and other women of color artists continue to disrupt and challenge these notions of who can produce art and the value we place on art.
I am really looking forward to dissecting this further throughout the quarter and challenge dominant modes of thinking surrounding art production!
