In the article “L.A.’s Eastside is a Latino ‘Ellis Island.’ But it’s time for Hollywood to branch out”, published by Julia Barajas to the Los Angeles Times (June 2021), the author writes about the approach two Netflix shows have been taking to depict East LA Latino culture. According to Barajas, the producer of one of the shows, Erik Huerta, wanted to present the nuances of gentrification found in these communities onto the big screen. Part of this mission was including a wide range of Latinos to be a part of the project. One example of this was putting Emilia Cruz in the spotlight by having her work be the main focus for a large part of the show.

In the news broadcast “Emilia Cruz, pinceladas contra la discriminación” published by CNN Español, they interview Emilia Cruz for involvement with the project ‘ser humano’. The interviewer asks why she was so drawn to participate in the program, to which Emilia responds that she can relate to the prompt due to years of discrimination towards her darker complexion. Emilia then goes on to explain how she chooses to focus on darker-skinned female bodies as they are often the most discriminated against.
