Do you have some space in your house that you put some objects that you can’t or don’t use anymore in the thought that you might need it someday? Did you ever realize that you could create a piece of art from those objects? Rasquachismo is a form of art that came out of Chicano culture. In simpler terms, rasquachismo is art created from useless things or things in hand. It is basically art made out of anything. An example of rasquachismo could be the picture attached below.
Rasquachismo came from the word rasquache which basically means "ghetto". In an interview, Cheech Marin, an American activist, actor, musician, art collector, comedian and writer, had the following to say about rasquachismo, "Anybody who knows rasquache recognizes it immediately. Rasquache is being able to take a little pushcart that sells ice cream cones and turn it into a three-bedroom house. That is the essence of it. You have to make art or something resembling art in your life with baser objects. It's not art made of gold, it’s made of tin, dirt or mud.” It came out of the poor ghetto neighborhood where people got a little creative with the little amount of resources they had. At first, it was just people getting creative, but then as you can see it became a thing. People started to create aesthetic art with their objects at hand.
Nowadays, rasquachismo art has evolved and became a big thing. It became so big that it even has a new type of branch too. That branch is called domesticana. Domesticana is basically the same things as rasquachismo, but in feminist lens. The website, storymaps.arcgis.com quotes, “Domesticana is a relevant topic for the reason being that it portrays feminine elements that are often tied with cultural memory.”
