New Wikipedia Draft for Paloma Montoya

Wikipedia: Artist Biography Article Template

Paloma Montoya (1986–present) is a Los Angeles visual artist known for vibrant paintings and illustrations that attempt to shine a more positive light on predominately brown and black communities. Her work entails an aggregate of past experiences, relationships, and friendships.

Biography (or Early Life and Education)

Paloma Montoya was born November 20, 1986 in the city of Artesia, California to a Colombian mother and Mexican father. She grew up in the city of South Gate, CA, and spent most of her life in the south east Los Angeles area alongside her younger sister.  Her father was in and out of her life growing up.  She had her first vivid experience with death when her grandfather passed when she was 4 years old.  Because of this she was raised predominantly by her mother, and maternal grandmother.  After her grandmother passed when she was 15, Montoya’s mother became a single working parent.

Montoya graduated from South Gate Senior High school in 2005, and later attended Long Beach City College from 2005-2010. At the same time, she began to work for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) as a teacher’s aide and returned back to school at East Los Angeles Community College to earn a degree in child development.  She stopped working for LAUSD in 2014 to become a full-time student, and enrolled in more art courses.

At this time, she began creating again, but was unsure if her artwork would sustain her.  She graduated in 2016 with an AA in Early Childhood Development and Studio Art.  She transferred to California State University of Long Beach in the fall.  However, Montoya fell into a deep depression and suicidal ideation during this time, so she ultimately made the decision to quit her academic career and pursue her career in art.

Her art career began in 2017.  Her works are heavily inspired by Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali.  Her community involved many works of graffiti and street are that also conveyed through her art.  Her artwork draws upon her experience as a woman living in a predominately Latinx working-class community, with inspirations drawing from the punk scene, hip-hop/ rap scene, low rider, and cholo/chola culture.  Though Montoya’s work can be viewed as humorous, or satire, she ties in personal experiences of love, internal battles, and female sexuality.
