Lomas Garza, Baile 2001 Week 5

Lomas Garza is originally from Kingsville Texas. She was born in 1948. Her vision and passion for art sprouted from her parents activism and continued through her work and activism and Chicano movement in the 1960s and 1970s. She went to the graduate school of Texas are in industry and San Francisco State University where she earned her masters in 1981. Her backstory roots from her father escaping the Mexican Revolution and his reasoning to move into Texas.
By being such a talented and authentic artist, she has been the recipient of many awards and has her art pieces showcased all throughout the United States. For example her work “Baile” created in 2001 displays are Mexican culture of a mariachi band playing and what appears to be friends and family gathered playing and dancing.
She has many recognizable artworks like: la llorona, Los Cascarones, Camas Para SueƱos, and my personal favorite “Abuelitos Piscando Nopalitos.”
Each one of her pieces has a cultural identity to it, read it from that of her background from being a Chicana.
Her art helps to paint a picture for the discrimination that many Chicano and Hispanic people endure. When she was younger, she was punished and bullied for speaking Spanish in school therefore she first hand felt the racial tension in America.
Lomas Garza now continues her work in San Francisco California and continues to paint scenes of her family life and give us a small glimpse of what a beautiful culture issues
