Sanchez, Cassandra

Hello everyone! My name is Cassandra Sanchez, my pronouns are she/her/hers, and I am currently a third year at UCLA. I am a Chicanx/Central American Studies major, with intent to double major in Communications. It has been a struggle to figure out what I am doing here, but I’m finally getting it together.

My home is in Chula Vista, born and raised there, located in South San Diego. My mom, who raised me on her own, was born in Tijuana, which is why we live so close to the border, to be as close as possible to our extended family. My father, who I don’t really know, is of Filipino descent, and that’s about as much as I know about him and his heritage. This is important to how I portray myself, because I grew up with mostly strong and independent women, and a few male role models. However, all of these women in my life have helped me realize my independence and pushed me to be the very best version of myself. As a first generation, Latina-Filipina woman at UCLA, I hold myself accountable to pursue higher education, and achieve the goals I set. With the past year, it feels like I lost that drive while being in lockdown and trying to provide for my family. Now, being back in Westwood, and having our campus nearby, I feel motivated to learn, join clubs, and enjoy my college life.

I have a passion for the arts, specifically visual arts, because it holds a special place in my heart. As a CCAS major, I have found flexibility in different topics and areas I am passionate about, thankfully there are art related courses as well. This is why I am taking this course, to learn more about Chicanx artists in the community, along with their growth and prominence. I am very excited to learn in this course along with all of you as well. Let’s do this!

  1. Growing up without a parent is an indescribably bad thing with really ad consequences. A lot of people that I know, who grew up without one of their parents, become less motivated and more hateful towards a lot of things in the world. But you and your mother are really heroes. I think there should be a heroes medal for single women raising children on their own. It is really praiseworthy of you and your mother to reach to the point that you guys are on your own. I wish you best of luck in whatever you decide to do!
