Meza-Rendon, Silvia (Extra Credit: Manifesto Armado)

The event began with an artistic movement that consisted of spoken word with sound effects of knifes. There were four individuals whom were on the screen, three played with knifes and one of them had a megaphone where she vocalized sounds and speech. They also rotated speaking and would stop using the knifes when they were vocalizing. It was interesting to see the way they pressed the knifes against a plastic board. Somewhere along the middle, one of the women peeled a pear during the spoken word. They worse masks to cover their faces and only their eyes showed making the sounds more intense. She spoke loud and powerful, the dialogue consisted of unity, resistance and love. It was motivating to hear a women use her voice to express herself. It evoked a lot of emotion in me, the sounds were very particular and had a moving effect.

These women identify themselves as La Revuelta, they are collective who are trying to make a name for themselves inside of the cultural, political and social scenery. They discussed how although they are artists it is not possibly to live a life and focus on it. To them this is a hobby where they can express themselves freely while wanting to make a change. Although they are from Guatemala they also shared that they had an upcoming project in Los Angeles which is an amazing opportunity. It makes me happy to see people create a sense of community for themselves especially as women. They are trying to reclaim their space and use their voices. I enjoyed being a part of the space and was moved by the way they showed their artistic movements. I wonder what it would be like to watch them perform in person, I am interested to follow up on their future exhibitions. It also made me reconsider joining a similar space where I can find that sense of community.
