I was blown away by Xandra Ibarra’s work. It is something I’ve never seen before. Sometimes our perception of art can become skewed because of the norm of what we see: paintings of nature and portraits, abstract sculptures, marble portraits, are amongst the most common things we see. So, when I saw Xandra’s work, I saw a performance. I was drawn to Turn Around Sidepiece , because it was mind blowing. She created a moving marble slab to show that history or in present day, our stories are moved to the sidelines, because as the marble spun the person turned around and moved in a different direction. I noticed that she was the person on the slab, and that she was naked-- she mentioned in the description that being nude is different from nakedness, because nude is staying still which gives people the opportunity to sexualize, but nakedness is the act of being naked; it is more intimate in the way that the body moves freely without thought of how one looks or is perceived. I think it was awesome that she created a video for this piece, because it seems to be draining to have to perform this for people and kind of nerve wracking too.
The visceral feeling of seeing someone naked depends on the person, and I think the way she moved her body to hide her face was incredible in the way that she was on a moving piece of marble and it just seemed so fluid! But overall, I think the view is stunning and it just tells many stories within one art work.
Question: I love how art can be interpreted in a multitude of ways, has anyone came up to you to tell you their own interpretation of your work?
