Ruby Chacon born and raised in Salt Lake City Utah. Her art resembles her being a Utah native and Chicana. She is an activist and muralist but also engages in prints. Nationally and internationally her works have been displayed in places like Morraco, Utah Wyoming and Thailand as well as locally to her. She comes to work a lot with youth as she is the youngest of 6 siblings and feels as a necessity to pay back and help first generation students. Chacon uses her family very much for her artistic work. Due to unforeseen circumstances, her family was seen as murders. She used art to re-portray her family. Her parents are from Mexican origin and this her Chicanx art. She often felt like her identity was concealed from her very early on.
Her uncle was a painter, allowed her to use much of his materials anad guided her. She has much of Pueblo Indians in her blood line. She focuses primarily on oil canvas based paintings. As she was a Utah native, she often wanted to resist Utah art, (landscapes) and for Chicanx people see “their own people” in her work. Much of her art is plastered in places like
Salt lake city airport, and Kimball art center as well as other public places.
Chacon has also funded and worked with many teens and led their murals. For her first art piece,
600 w Salt Lake City Utah, she depicts her community as she sees it. The Virgen Mary in normal people. Field worker construction workers, hardworking people and the liveliness of the community. She also included the traditional landscape in background- which combines both identities. In the second, Mi abuelito Cosme chacon, on ground. For the JOY foundation she wanted to feel a connection with the audience, community, and her.
Lastly,Canvas, showcased in the Taneco gallery with Flor Olivo on research about spiritual activism.
Ruby Chacon is a diverse and very talented artist.
