Week 10 Reflection

I enrolled into this class because I have previously taken Professor Lopez before, I took Censored Ary on Trial. Both courses where very similar, I did not take the class for that reason. I took this class because the material that the Professor teaches is very interesting and there is no way to get bored while being in class. I loved everything about these two classes and specially that we get to draw, like how better can it get you are learning and also learning how to draw. If I could have the chance to continue taking her classes I would, greatly recommend the professor and the TA did an amazing job and would always go out of their ways to remind us about assignments or upcoming extra credit opportunities.

Week 9 Artist Presentations

Another artist that caught my attention during these presentations was Judy Baca, Baca is a painter, muralist, monument builder, and former UCLA professor. The artwork that Baca creates is very intriguing and inspiring. Her work reflects the lives and concerns of populations that have been historically disenfranchised, including women, the working poor, youth, and immigrant communities. Her public works projects are often created in impoverished neighborhoods as a way to help revitalize these areas. She is well known for her mural The Great Wall of Los Angeles this mural has great history not only of Los Angeles but of past moments that have been famous landmarks to people.

Week 8 Artist Reflection

The artist that caught my attention during the attention was Sandra Fabara "Lady Pink". Lady Pink was born in Ecuador, raised in NYC and currently resides in the countryside north of the city. In 1979 she started writing graffiti and soon was well known as the only female capable of competing with the boys in the graffiti subculture. Pink painted subway trains from the years 1979-1985. In 1982 she had a starring role the motion picture "Wild Style". That role and her other significant contributions to graffiti have made her a cult figure in the hip-hop subculture. She was very interesting to learn about because graffiti is considered unlawful so she was very brave to be doing graffiti in the streets, and also because of gangs. Doing graffiti may be a symbol of claiming territory and gang could have misinterpreted her art for disrespect.

Week 7 Artist

The artist that I selected is Natalia Anciso, she is a Chicano-Tejana artist and I selected her because her artwork is very unique. She works with various materials and her style is very unique in comparison to other artists. I also selected Natalia Anciso because her work goes by series, she creates a series and adds on to it throughout the year until she is happy with closing it off and finishing. Most of her work deals with immigration, the separation of families, and motherhood and it is because of what she experienced growing up in Texas.

Week 6 Stencil

For my stencil, I wanted to select something that is very meaningful towards me and that is being a DREAMER. A Dreamer is an individual who has DACA status, as a dreamer I came to the United States when I was young. My parents brought me here to receive a better lifestyle and although I miss where I am from I am grateful for all the opportunities I have received here in the U.S. such as a free education. The stencil I chose was of a monarch butterfly, it is a symbol of dreamers to keep flying/ fighting and reach our goals.

Artist Choice Falcon,Joan

My artist of choice for our paper and presentation is Natalia Anciso

Week 3 Falcon,Joan

My favorite image from Yolanda Lopez was  When You Think of Mexico a video cover case. This meant a lot to me because it shows the stereotypes that people have towards Mexico and show their lack of cultural knowledge. This image showed that people will throw in a mustache on a short man, maracas, a sombrero to depict Mexican culture but in reality they do not know what a real Mexican culture is. You see this everyday because when you meet someone who has never interacted with Mexican culture and if you hang out with them most likely the first thing they'll think of you is corridos and tacos but fail to realize theres more music available and more food. You see this in gentrified Mexican restaurants/bars like 'Cabo Cantina' owned by white owners, ran by white people, cooks are mexican, and the decorations are mexican hats, music instruments, mustaches and beer all around as if thats what Mexican culture is all about.

Week 2 Falcon,Joan

The CARA essay by Professor Garcia Gaspar de Alba was very interesting and made this week exciting.CARA stands for Chicano Art Resistance and Affirmations. It was more of an exhibit which represented what many young Chicanos were going through and depicted the struggle of the Chicano movement. This exhibit had full exposure but lacked women, the women were only painted mainly as Virgenes as a way to state typical Chicano stereotypes, to me the virgen represents motherhood, when we were asked to think of female artists almost no one had a female artist in mind and this explains why, females have been unfairly treated and not included.

Falcon,Joan

My name is Joan Falcon and this is my last year at UCLA until graduation. My preferred pronouns are he/his/him. After I graduate I plan on obtaining a certification in project management and hopefully return to receive my masters. I am taking this class because I took a similar class on Chicano art and I loved it and this quarter this class has a similar setup.
