Chicano! PBS Documentary - Taking Back The Schools
This is the PBS documentary titled Chicano!: Taking Back The Schools which we started watching on the first day of class. The documentary focuses on the 1968 Los Angeles school walkouts or blow outs. These high school students were protesting high drop out rates or attrition, crumbling school facilities, and lack of Mexican American teachers.
I included this video as an introduction to the term Chicana/o. Chicana/o is a complex and evolving identity, but the defining characteristic is a self-awareness or consciousness of history, politics, place, culture, language, etc.
