Blog Week 7: Artist Presentation
The artist that stood out to me most out of the artist presentations was Laura Aguilar. Many of the artists that we have seen thus far have been focused around painting or drawing. The excitement about being presented some photographers only enhanced after Laura Aguilar's work was shown to us. I loved how raw her photos are. This photo was a good representation of the work that she does because many of her photos focus on marginalized women, including women of color and bigger sizes. I think this is a stark contrast to many of the women that are portrayed in photographs for the most part. Most of the women who are seen in photos-- whether it be magazines or photographs by people in fine arts-- are thin, tall, pale women. I have always thought that it was very important to have images of various types of women because representation of bodies and the power of images is super important. Also, the courage of Aguilar to use herself as one of the models allows her viewers into a very intimate part of her life.
