It
was interesting to learn about different Chicana artists and what art means to
them. Among the works I saw, this picture by Laura Aguilar was impressive for
me. The first reason for the impression would be that the artist shows her own
body which would be usually hesitated to show. As she also says, she used to
think her stomach is too big and she is not beautiful. But facing her own body
through photography empowered her by gaining the confidence that her body can
be considered attractive. Her pictures are new form of art for me because I haven’t
seen any work where a relatively fat body is presented as a main model and as a
part of the nature. In this picture, she is like a rock behind her. This work is
possible in a sense because she has that body, and hence she can show her body
as one form of beauty. Photography in itself seems to be her place of
confidence and pleasure as she states that it is comfortable to expose her naked
body and feel the nature such as the ground and the sun directly with her skin.
I think this picture has a good message that there is no certain concept or
limitation to beauty or attractiveness, as it is possible for each body to be
respected.
Takase,
ReplyDeleteI appreciated what Laura Aguilar was trying to represent with her photography as well. I too am not quite used to seeing large women represented in art, which is a shame, as everyone is beautiful. The fact that Aguilar is not afraid to show her body does send out a positive message to everyone that we are all different shapes and sizes, and that everyone is beautiful in their own way. I enjoyed reading your post, and agree with your analyzations.
I was also intrigued by her photographs, especially those where she incorporated herself into. I feel she is very courageous by posing nude because our society and the media promote thin bodies and chastise those whose bodies do not fit the mold of what a "good looking" person looks like. I also like the connection the Professora made between Laura, the places, and the rocks. Since Laura would go on family trips to these locations and later posed similar to rocks, it was as if she herself was embedded in that place at that time.
