An artist I would like to potentially share with the class is a Afro-Cuban artist by the name Lili Bernard. She is based in Los-Angeles, where she also currently displays her work at an art gallery downtown. She was born in Cuba and raised in New Jersey. Bernard's work is often described as "universal in its themes" where she focuses on illuminating the traumatic experiences in the New World of Afro-Latina womxn. Not only does she highlight sexual traumas but also the concurring conflict of Afro-Latinas to fit unrealistic Eurocentric beauty standards.
The painting pictured is titled "The Sale of Venus," and embodies a more classical type of painting style. With her work, she adds to the that time period of stories that were kept out of paintings or not portrayed with such beauty.
I admire her work since, as she comes from a background similar to mine with a number of difference identities and her work beautifully embodies the struggle of these womxn whose stories are often untold and erased, just like the Afro-Latinx population.
Mahal, I look forward to your paper/presentation on this artist. Prof. Lopez
