Hi! My name is
Nataly Castro. I was born in San Diego, Ca and was raised between there and
Tijuana, Baja California. I am a senior majoring in psychology, graduating this
June. I have always been a creative person and when I was younger I expressed
this creativity into makeup, photography, and décor (for parties or events). It
wasn’t until high school that I discovered that I could draw. Once I made this
discovery, I was obsessed with it for about a few months, and that is all I
would do all day. Eventually I had to go into college and I stopped, mostly
because of people around me
saying that it was not a “career.” I started focusing on other stuff and I
never got to take any art courses. Hopefully this class can help me get back to
what I love. One goal that I have is that every time I have time off from
school to go back to Mexico and see a place I have never been to before and taking
pictures. So far, I have been to about 7 states and 12 cities.
The
article "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" by Linda
Nochlin was an interesting read. This article focused on women in art and
literally asks the questions “why have there been no great women artists?” It
basically explains that the reason this is, is because women face a
disadvantage. We have never really been given a chance. Realizing how the
disadvantages women face in the workforce can be traced back to the 1700s is
heartbreaking. The fact that women were not able to advance in this area because it was literally impossible goes to show how much women have had to fight to be heard or have space in areas like these. It was as true as it is today, no matter how talented women are,
men always have the advantage.
