Debra Blake’s Chicana Sexuality and Gender

CH 5 Pg 193 "Other Chicana researchers have suggested to me that domestic violence carriers similar taboos within Chicana/o culture and that very little research has been done on the topic. These findings indicate that cross-cultural research can be valuable in contributing to the body of knowledge about specific cultures and that conscientious white researchers can play a role."

To further the idea of a change in the Chicana community, Blake brings up a point in chapter 5, page 193 of her book by saying, “Other Chicana researchers have suggested to me that domestic violence carriers similar taboos within Chicana/o culture and that very little research has been done on the topic. These findings indicate that cross-cultural research can be valuable in contributing to the body of knowledge about specific cultures and that conscientious white researchers can play a role.” Blake clearly states that not only are both sides of the issue part of the problem but both sides are part of the solution. Within the Chicano community there is still social stigma which stops certain formative problems from being vocalized. While this hinders the community from progression, it also stifles creativity and healing to community members. Those not in the Chicano community play a vital role by listening, learning and acting as an accomplice in the fight for social justice, gender equality and the revision of stereotypes as Blake states in her introduction.

  1. Do you think the problem with domestic violence is the lack of research on it, despite the culture that is the focus if the study? Would conducting research and spending time, money, and brains on a study to show the stats of such a crime help resolve it as a problem. Domestic violence is not something unique to Chicano culture, or any culture, race, religion, gender. Would it be better to spend the man power on ways to educate, prevent, stop, and save people from domestic violence no matter what they identify as?
