Hello!
My name
Yurica Indra and my preferred pronouns are she/her. I am currently majoring in
Financial Actuarial Mathematics, and I'm a junior transfer from Diablo Valley
College. I am originally from Indonesia, a country in Southeast Asia with
traditional cultures and roots. Coming to the United States, I want to take
this opportunity to learn more about the vast culture of United States. Despite
my math related major, I also have an interest in art. Therefore, I am hoping
that this class can introduce me to the world of Chicanx artists.
Reading the articles, it made me realize how
feminism is becoming more significant nowadays, and I am glad for it. In “Conditions
for Producing Chicana Art”, Sybil discussed about how Chicanas were not allowed
to make art due to patriarchy in the Mexican culture in the past. After hearing
about the pain these women go through, I admire how far these women have progressed
to changing the social norms and values. In addition, Linda Nochlin gave us an
insight to why we always assume that there are no great women artists. She then
explained that it is due to institutional, and not individual reasons. For
women, there is lack of education and also restrictions on art.
Another reading I found interesting is Alma
Lopez’ essay, “It’s not about the Sana in My Fe, but the Santa Fe in My Santa”.
I was fascinated by her story of how La Virgen de Guadalupe become a revolutionary
cultural icon, as well as a symbol of unity. She then also explained how La
Virgen de Guadalupe inspired her to make her works as an artist.
Through this quarter, I am truly looking forward
to learning more about the culture of the talented Chicana artists in this
class.
