Presentation: Isis Rodriguez
To be honest, I was amazed by all the Chicana artists on the blog list, however the work of Isis Rodriquez stood out to me the most.
Isis Rodriquez was born in 1964 in Los Angeles, CA. She is an American contemporary painter and cartoon artist. Isis identifies herself as mestiza and is the daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and a Mexican father.. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelors of Fine Art in painting in 1988. Isis has had her artwork published in several books, including Judy Chicago and Edward Lucie Smith's 'Women and Art: Contested Territory' and 'Vicious, Delicious, and Ambitious: 20th Century Women Artists'.
She currently lives in San Miguel de Allende Guanajuato Mexico where she continues to create art.
Her unique style to use cartoon work as a conceptual tool to exemplify her skills and bring awareness to the importance of empowerment and liberation of women is admirable. Her cartoons allows her to make satirical commentaries about women's issues and celebrates the freedom of younger women by creating graphic art. She creates a hybrid style that introduces her audience to the expression of new possibilities for female identity and spirituality. I really enjoy her artwork because her paintings redefine traditional symbols.
