Presentation: Jessica Sabogal

Jessica Sabogal is a first-generation Colombian American spray paint muralist and digital/screen print artist that uses art as a tool of resistance and empowerment for communities of color and queer/Trans people of color. Her current project #womenareperfect highlights womxn of color in the community that continue to exist and resist in a society that has hxstorically marginalized them. She acknowledges that she is a female muralist in a male-dominated medium and works hard to make sure that her work is representative of these struggles. When muralism is taught so are the tres grandes that had a big influence and role in shaping the mural movement for the Latinx/Chicanx community. However, Jessica  and her work causes a disruption in the dominant narrative of how womxn of color are represented which is what I also intend to do in my art work as well. Her digital/screen prints have been used in many protests which in itself reveals the impact her work has.

Jessica's work is representative of how art can be used as a tool of resistance, healing and empowerment. Her work has inspired my research interests and I am very excited to show more folks the importance and impact her work has had on muxeres of color across the United States. For my presentation, I will be incorporating my research project and analyzing the ways her art acts as a tool of decolonization and reaffirms identity/community formation for underrepresented QTWOC. I especially admire that her art centers the importance of valuing, respecting, and acknowledging the power and knowledge womxn of color hold.
