Roberto Tejada’s Celia Alvarez Munoz


In Celia Alvarez Munoz, Roberto Tejeda articulates a scholarly account of artist Celia Alvarez Munoz in an in-depth study that eloquently draws upon biography, cultural and art history and close visual analysis. Tejeda accomplishes his study by exploring the arbitrariness of language and the work of image-text artist Celia Alvarez Munoz whose art engages the indexical nature of art. In 1994, Alvarez Munoz explored the topics of socialization, sexuality and gender identity in her mixed media installation A Brand New Ball Game. In this installation, Celia used large wooden different colored cubes with words printed on a side that were used to lead exercises to formulate sentences related to culture and Catholicism, recollection memory builders about both individuals in and out of the closet and sex terms relating to well-being and pathology. Celia’s installation of the three sets of vocabulary blocks really stood out to me because of the power this art piece gives the viewer; purpose through language as the vehicle. All three aspects to the blocks allows to convey Celia’s exploration of socialization, sexuality and gender identity through showcasing it historically and conceptually. I really approve her installation because it allows the viewer to self reflect and acquire knowledge about their trajectory that got them where they are today. Tejada’s analysis of Celia Alvarez Munoz art places the reader in a path whose terminus is ultimately a tool of discovery and power of self-interpretation. Tejada sequentially allows us to act upon the visions and concerns of Mexican-Americans through her art and demonstrates the issues relating to experience, identity and sexuality. Through her art installations I was able to detect the embodiment and intersection of culture and environment. She clearly embodies her identity and the place she comes from through her work. Additionally, I appreciate her art because she provides a context that artists could intensify their experiences through language.
