Presentation: Ana Mendieta

The artist this week who's work stood out was Ana Mendieta's. Her sister and she were sent from Mexico to the United States when she was twelve years old. She lived in an orphanage home, and after eventually attended school in Iowa. She engaged in her art and disrupted many silences and norms. Her work is autobiographical, or she creates as a response of an event. She likes to use the four elements in her work. I thought the silhouettes she made were very interesting and exemplified her use of the four elements. She had an outline of her body at the beach in the sand, made from snow, on fire, and buried in the Earth. With these works, she creates a connection between the earth and her body to make her feel whole again. The beach silhouette had red dye tossed all over it to perhaps represent the violence against women and their bodies. She was also committed to standing against this violence against women. She created a rape scene to speak up against this violence and it was very graphic but also was a very important work of hers. She also challenged beauty standards through her images of women with beards. I feel she was also showing that there is not a standard look for both women and men.
