Carmen Lomas Garza

Image result for sandia carmen lomas garzaCarmen Lomas Garza is a Chicana artist who grew up in South Texas. Her artwork depicts a lot of her childhood memories and with me also growing up in a Mexican household I am able to relate to a lot of her artwork. The art piece of gouache on cotton paper from the Pedacito de mi Corazon series titled Sandia/Watermelon (1986) by Carmen Lomas Garza depicts a family sitting in their front porch enjoying a freshly cut watermelon. This artwork spoke to me because it definitely reminded me of my family because I have lived through very similar nights like that with my family. I am very family oriented, so the artwork is very easily relatable. The art piece depicts a male figure slicing the watermelon and this reminded me of my dad because he is usually the one to cut up the watermelon into slices for the whole family. There are also two children at the table grabbing a slice of watermelon and those two children remind me of my brother and I, especially because the female child seems to be older than the male child and I am older than my brother. To me, this painting depicts the unity of a family underneath a cool summer night enjoying some watermelon together away from technology and enjoying each other’s presence. The sense of familial unity and affection was the theme Carmen Lomas Garza was aiming for when she worked on this piece and it truly depicts effectively. This art piece is just one of many in the Pedacito de mi Corazon series and the series has a lot of depictions of familial unity. The series was done as a reflection of her love for her family.

  1. When going through Carmen Lomas Garza’s work, I also very much related to this image, I actually found myself relating to a good majority of her work. Your interpretation of this particular image is very similar to what I would interpret from this piece. I am also very family oriented and I think thats one of the key aspects to Lomas Garza’s work that makes it so relatable. Most of the time, she is attributing a lot of her work to her family by representing her love for her family though truly capturing their unity in everyday activities and community gatherings.

I like how you said that it seems like its a summer night where they are all gathering to enjoy each other’s presence without technology. I really liked your interpretation and I can really picture my own family in a situation similar to this, just as you explained that it reminded you of your dad cutting the watermelon and the different ages between yourself and your siblings. For me, I can definitely imagine my grandparents being in town and my mom “dragging” all of the kids out of the house to spend some time outside with the whole family and this is something that I really enjoy from Carmen Lomas Garza’s work, that it’s so relatable to Mexican-American and Latino families in general, like you explained.
