Presentation: Laura Aguilar

From the presentations during week 8, Laura Aguilar's presentation stood out to me the most. Not only is Laura Aguilar able to catch the attention of viewer's eye instantly, but she is also able to weave a message within her art. The image shown during the presentation was very interesting because of the way everything in the scene/picture lines up perfectly including her naked body. After class I googled more of her art and all her photographs catch the attention of the viewer in some sort of way.  I really like the way Aguilar approaches photography/art, her openness and sense of play really helps quantify her views as a feminist/Latina.  I believe everyone should be able to use their body in any way they would like without judgement and Aguilar is no stranger to being courageous. Aguilar explores her body and uses her body to embrace the beauty of her body as part of nature itself as she posses infant of nature. The way Aguilar embraces and empowers herself through her art instead of being ashamed of herself is very inspiring. It is unfortunate that Laura Aguilar passed away last month, however her art will continue to live on.

  2. Hi Brandon,

I totally agree with you. When our classmate was presenting her, I felt that courage she gave off by Aguilar embracing her body. Not only that, but I feel that, as a female (or anyone), she encourages you to learn how to love yourself. Which is very important. I also admire her work and I agree with you that even if she is not here with us anymore, her art will live within us to provide the necessary strength we need to embrace our mind, soul, and body.

  3. Hi Brandon! I loved this presentation too! I think Laura does something unique and different. Her attitude towards her body, and how she uses it for her art is very unique and liberating. Sometimes I have an issue with people saying stuff like 'she's so courageous' because if it was a skinny person being photographed naked no one would say 'wow, she's so strong, she has so much confidence.' It's just a body. And I feel like her art reflects that kind of attitude. She uses her body as something natural that just exists, and that, I can appreciate.

  4. I agree with your perspective on Aguilar and how she portrayed her art to be immediately eye-catching. The act of doing so captivates the audience's attention, and by portraying her body so freely motivates one to want to be as liberated as she was in her pictures. Just like you mentioned, her art will live on, motivating those viewing it to be as care free as she was.
