Week 8 Presentations: Liliana Navarro

A particular artist that caught my eye was Liliana Navarro because I personally follow her on all her social media handles. She is the same age as me so it was amazing to see that her content and her following has grown so much. I do not know much about her since she is pretty much not as well known as the other Chicana artist, however her website states "Liliana Navarro aka Lili 'La Artista' is a young Bay Area-based artist and activist who uses her paintings to depict brown women and Chicano culture in the art space. In Liliana’s work, you’ll find Chicano as a recurring motif at the intersection of femininity and brown power, a theme that has gotten her considerable attention in the midst of today’s global cultural movements. As the daughter of a Zacatecas-born father and her mother from San Jose, Liliana’s culturally-fused upbringing would ultimately shape her artwork"(https://lordlili.wixsite.com/artistalili/about-me). Interestingly, she does specialized portraits of people and is currently selling other art pieces.

A particular piece that stood out to me was her Divine Feminity piece which is her rework of La Virgen. She states that, “The female energy was powerful in my house. Brown girls inspire me to paint. From my family to friends, the women I surround myself with are clever, strong and beautiful. Seeing them, seeing myself, I feel inspired to capture that essence in my paintings.” It was interesting to see a rework of La Virgen after seeing Yolanda Lopez' and Professor Lopez' rework of La Virgen. Liliana's rework was an interesting take since she did not to include her whole body. I noticed that the two moons above her is probably referencing the "La Luna" loteria card and the roses symbolize feminity.

  1. I also very much enjoyed the work presented by this artist, it was interesting to see such a young artist that is creating such powerful images. I feel that because she is younger, she is able to appeal to a different audience group. I tried searching just her name in google and she didn't show up, so then I tried “Liliana Navarro artist” and a bunch of the classmates posts showed up, along with several images of her work (many of which we saw in class). I remember the presenter said she found her through a social media platform so I looked her up as “Lili La Artista” on twitter and I was so captured by her posts. She's very relatable and she seems to always speak her mind. It’s definitely tricky to find information on younger and upcoming artists and I think its really cool how now everybody in class is introduced to this new artist and hopefully this helps her in obtaining a larger audience.
