Rosales Harmonia
Of all the presentations in the last week the one on Rosales Harmonia caught my eye. The painting titled God is a Black Woman in particular was memorable and peaked my interest. I felt that the presenter did an excellent job giving background information and also talking about the individual pieces. As for the painting, I thought that the classic image of God changed to be of a black woman was clever and also bold. For centuries the idea of what God really looks like has been debated and fought over and has yet to be a solid consensus. Therefore, why not make God a black woman? Since the topic of what Jesus really looked like changes tone depending on the location of the conversation, the depiction of Jesus has also been up for debate. I thought that the idea was clever and made a statement of equality for a group of people who have historically been marginalized. Since this presentation, I have begun to look deeper into the work of Rosales Harmonia and have found her work to be intriguing and fascinating.

Hi Elise,
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your blog post, I can say that I totally feel the same way. I feel that the painting was also clever because it makes people reflect and provokes them to think why it can't be a woman? Your though brought me back to the religious idea that women, for some reason, cannot become priest. My question all these years has been, why can't a woman become one? Which is why I felt that this image was very empowering to influence women to fight their place within the religious community.
I agree with your point of view as well as Jackie's, I also wrote my reflection on this piece, and I thought the same thing. I think the issue was beyond changing God's image; the controversy showed how people feel about women and people of color which is funny given that God is non-judging and like you mentioned, nobody truly knows what he looks like so who's to judge? Great piece!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you a hundred percent, and I agree with Mari's comment above. This piece wouldn't be controversial if someone had painted a white man as Jesus (sort of how it is now), but he wasn't white. Jesus was from a brown country, so I never understood why he was depicted the way he was. But since it is a black women as God, all of a sudden it's not right.
