This is the blog for the UCLA Chicanx Latinx Art and Artists course offered by the Cesar E. Chavez Department of Chicanx Central American Studies (CCAS M175, also Art M184 and World Arts and Cultures M128). This course provides a historical and contemporary overview of Chicanx Latinx art production with an emphasis on painting, photography, prints, murals and activist art.

Class Reflection
This class taught me an abundance of Chicana artists. I enjoyed that fact that these women were each so different however their art was so beautiful to learn and look at. The artist that enticed me was definitely Carmen Lomas Garza because a lot of her art resonated with me. Her art was a symbolic representation of her close-knit family and Chicano culture. It was nice to learn about Chicana artists that do different types of art especially muralists who do so much for the community. It was also nice for the class to be taught from a beginners approach and from a Chicana artist herself.
The sketchbook project was fun even though I wasn't entirely confident in my artistic abilities but its rare to be able to draw in class so I really enjoyed the fact that we learned about artist and did our own art as well. The artist presentations were interesting because I was able to learn about so many Chicana artists and the different art they all did. In high school, I took an art course taught by a Chicano muralist however the only Chicanx artist we were taught was Frida Kahlo so after taking this course it really opened my eyes because I didn't know that there was so many Chicana artist who aren't Frida Kahlo.
The research presentations were impressive as well. I enjoyed how intersectional they were, and how passionate each student was about their research, and I might consider doing research about art as well. Lastly, this class really inspired to pursue and continue to do art. It really rekindled my inner artist, and my goal for the rest of the year is to do more water color paintings and hopefully I'll be able to murals as well.
Thank you to Professor Lopez for putting in the work to teach this amazing class--I will definitely recommend this class to my colleagues.
