Laura Aguilar is a Chicana photographer who is notable for her work capturing realistic images of marginalized individuals in communities, specifically women. I really appreciate the highlighting of the realistic aspects of her photos, especially with bodies. There is a lack of spotlight on those who don't fit society's narrative of what is beautiful and supposedly accepted as attractive, and Aguilar definitely challenges those narratives.
I also appreciate that her work is open to interpretation but there is a clear sense of deviance from what is declared normative. From photographic settings of nature to a living room, she still deviates from the norm. I believe that this type of art should be highlighted to a greater extent, to where it is not controversial or "ground-breaking" to photograph someone who seems to fit society's narrative for what beauty is, where there is no longer a box to fit in to but instead emphasizing unique qualities and characteristics to bring to the table.
