Reflection Post

Looking back at this quarter I have come to realize that there are so many Chicanx/Latinx artists that are not being recognized for their work. We started this class with only know about sixteen Chicanx/Latinx artists and that isn’t very much. As the course continued I was able to learn about so many more Chicanx/Latinx artists with the help and knowledge of my classmates. Each one of us chose one artist to focus on and researched the artist. This helped with gaining a larger insight on the various amounts of Chicanx/Latinx artists there are out there in the world. Altogether, we were able to expand our knowledge of Chicanx/Latinx artist from only knowing about sixteen to doubling that number. This course allowed me to have a greater appreciation of Chicanx/Latinx artwork. My favorite part of this course was drawing our self-portraits in our little black books. It was a challenge for me since I am not artistic and I found it really funny when I completed it because in my opinion it looks nothing like me and more like a cartoon character. It was a fun experience trying to recreate one of my pictures on paper with a pencil. Another one of my favorite part of class was the work we did with the watercolors. It was relaxing doing the different color gradients in our books. There was a sense of satisfaction when is saw it complete and I especially loved the way the colors melted together. Overall, this course was exactly what I expected and much more. I genuinely enjoyed taking this course.

  1. Hi Angelica, after reading your post, I remember how I felt during the beginning of the quarter. When the professor asked us to give names of artists we know, I could only list five and those were famous European artists. When we went in turn to mention the artist name that was not already listed on the board, I panicked because the artists that I wrote on my paper were already listed. The result also made me realize that male dominate female and white dominate people of color. Throughout this course, I learned the stories of how the minorities fought for equality.

  2. Hi Angie, I agree! My favorite part was the watercolor because even if you mess up it's still art in a weird way, and it doesn't have to look perfect. I was nervous to use watercolors since I don't paint but it turned out pretty good. I also think that the number of Chicanx artist we named at the beginning of the class was really low. I think it was less than that. It makes me happy to give recognition to these artists and show how their work is so valuable.
