Going into this class, I really didn't know what to expect! I knew very little about both art and Chicana history. Almost since reading the first article, I was naturally very interested, which I didn't expect! There were a lot of things being mentioned that I had never considered or been able to put into words. Moving on from women in art to Chicanas in art, I got to learn more and more about Chicana history. Even though virgen de Guadalupe seemed like a pretty renowned figure, I had never heard of her before! So pretty much everything was completely new to me.
Overall, I feel like I learned to appreciate Chicano/Chicana/Chicanx culture in a way that I would never have been able to had I not taken this class. And with this unique relationship to art, I found a way to connect to art in a way outside of being a hobby. Hearing the importance of these artists' work and what it meant to them in an individual and cultural way felt like such a gift! It was a nice break from my science classes, and it felt nice to be surrounded by such inspiring and creative classmates (:
