2020Hernandez, Jennifer

After reading Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s article, “Out of the House, the Halo, and the Whore Mask: The Mirror of Malinchismo”, I was saddened by the type of negativity put into a woman’s worth. It strikes me unfortunate that only males are ever recognized for their work, in art, music, etc. it used to be said that woman was not built to physically paint murals because they could not climb ladders or scaffolds and because they would not be able to withstand the comments of passerby’s. What seriously infuriated me the most about this is that even after trying to establish an understanding of Chicanos in the art they fail to nail the main point of el Movimiento. After getting over the hump of being undermined as Chicana/o artist, women still have to jump over extra hoops. Yet women get deemed as “not physically strong” enough to endure certain aspects like climbing a  ladder? For centuries, women have had to go the extra mile just to get the small appreciation that men get. I think it is safe to say that women are stronger then people think. Or maybe its the fear they have within themselves. Maybe they try to belittle women because they know if they were to be empowered they would take over and be greater at some things that men would not be able to compare to.

My question to Alicia Gaspar de Alba is: has she gotten any judgment overturned about her or her writing, since writing this article?
