For my project I am choosing to present on a artist at UCLA. Her name is Sienna Gonzalez. I chose her because her art is very beautiful and she uses very bright colors. Basically I really enjoy her style and I think that is important to appreciate. She unlike many of the artist I have learned about so far seems to sway away from cultural or social criticism and tends to focus more on empowerment of the female body and brings a sense of hope and realness with every piece she creates.
Alicia Gaspar de Alba's piece "Out of the House, the Halo, and the Whore's Mask: The Mirror of Malinchismo" is a very informative article. I liked how she was able to call out how lacking the CARA was. It was great because it showed how these women had to not only face racial oppression but gender oppression as well. I also thought that it was important for the article to touch upon the fact that the female art tends to be seen as an attempt to push the feminist agenda. I liked that part because that is mindset that is still very prominent today. Lastly I enjoyed the fact the the writer pointed out the the homegirl art piece was not actually a representation of “homegirl” but rather reflected how homegirl was a representation of what homeboy desired. They went as far as to describe how the tattoo of the car represented how she like the car was owned by homeboy and manipulated for his benefit.
